Introduction

In today’s interconnected digital world, cyber threats are evolving rapidly, and phishing remains one of the most pervasive and damaging cybercrimes. Phishing attacks exploit human behavior and trust, tricking individuals into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, bank details, or personal information. The sophistication of these attacks has grown over time, making traditional detection mechanisms less effective.

To combat this, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool for detecting phishing attempts. However, as AI systems grow more complex, their decision-making processes often become opaque or difficult to interpret—a phenomenon known as the “black box” problem. This is where Explainable AI (XAI) comes into play. XAI offers transparency in AI-powered phishing detection systems, enabling humans to understand, trust, and refine these tools for enhanced security.

This article delves into the role of Explainable AI in phishing detection, exploring how it transforms cybersecurity by making AI-driven decisions transparent and actionable.

The Growing Threat of Phishing and the Role of AI

Phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated and targeted. From general phishing emails sent to thousands of users to highly personalized spear-phishing attacks, cybercriminals use advanced tactics to deceive their victims. According to cybersecurity reports, phishing is responsible for over 90% of data breaches globally, making it a critical area of focus for organizations and individuals alike.

Traditional phishing detection methods, such as spam filters or static rule-based systems, often fall short due to the dynamic nature of phishing tactics. To address this, AI and Machine Learning (ML) have been deployed to detect phishing attempts by analyzing patterns in emails, URLs, and user behavior. AI systems can process vast amounts of data in real-time, identifying subtle indicators of phishing that humans might miss.

For instance, machine learning models can assess linguistic patterns in emails, detect malicious links, or flag unusual sender behavior.

However, while AI has proven to be effective in phishing detection, its lack of transparency poses significant challenges. Users and cybersecurity professionals may struggle to understand why an AI system flagged an email as phishing or failed to detect a threat. This lack of explainability can lead to mistrust, misinterpretation, or even misuse of AI systems. This is where Explainable AI becomes a game-changer.

What is Explainable AI (XAI)?

Explainable AI (XAI) refers to AI systems and models designed to be transparent and interpretable. Unlike traditional black-box AI, where the decision-making process is hidden within complex algorithms, XAI provides insights into how and why a model arrived at a specific decision. This transparency is critical in sensitive domains such as healthcare, finance, and cybersecurity, where trust and accountability are paramount.

In the context of phishing detection, XAI enables users and cybersecurity teams to understand the reasoning behind an AI system’s classifications. For example, if an email is flagged as phishing, XAI can highlight the specific features—such as suspicious sender details, unusual attachments, or deceptive language—that contributed to the decision. This not only enhances trust in the system but also allows for better collaboration between humans and AI in combating phishing threats.

Why Explainable AI in Phishing Detection

The integration of Explainable AI into phishing detection systems addresses several critical challenges:

Improved Trust and Adoption: Users are more likely to trust and adopt AI-based phishing detection systems when they understand how decisions are made. Without transparency, users may be skeptical of false positives (legitimate emails flagged as phishing) or false negatives (phishing emails that go undetected).

Regulatory Compliance: Many industries are subject to regulations that require transparency and accountability in the use of AI, such as GDPR and AI ethics guidelines. XAI ensures compliance by providing clear explanations for AI-driven decisions.

Human-AI Collaboration: Cybersecurity professionals can use XAI insights to refine detection mechanisms, identify gaps in AI models, and improve overall system performance. For example, if XAI reveals that a phishing email was flagged due to unusual language patterns, security teams can investigate further and create additional safeguards.

Handling Sophisticated Attacks: Modern phishing attacks often bypass traditional AI systems by mimicking legitimate communication patterns. XAI helps by providing detailed insights into why certain emails are flagged, enabling continuous improvement of phishing detection models.

Reducing Operational Risks: Organizations rely on AI to prevent phishing-related data breaches, but without explainability, they risk security failures. XAI reduces these risks by making the decision-making process transparent and actionable.

Example: XAI in Phishing Detection

Let’s assume an organization has implemented an AI-based phishing detection system to protect its employees from phishing emails. The XAI system detects a suspicious email and provides an explanation for why it flagged the email as a phishing attempt.

Scenario: A Phishing Email Detected

Email Subject: “URGENT: Your account has been compromised!”

Sender: admin@securebank-login.com

Email Body:

The AI detects the email as a phishing attempt and uses Explainable AI techniques to explain its reasoning.

How XAI Explains This to the User?

The XAI system provides a human-readable explanation to the employee or security analyst:

Decision: The email was flagged as phishing because:

The sender’s domain does not match the legitimate domain of SecureBank.

The email uses suspicious urgency-inducing language.

The email contains a link to a suspicious domain that mimics a legitimate one.

The email lacks personalization, which is common in phishing attempts.

The XAI system also provides a confidence score:

Confidence Score: 92% probability that this email is a phishing attempt.

Sample Step-by-Step Implementation of Phishing Detection with XAI in R

Step 1: Install Required Packages

Step 2: Load and Explore the Dataset

Load a phishing dataset from a CSV file (you can download one from Kaggle).

Step 3: Preprocess the Data

Remove non-relevant columns (such as URL strings)

Encode categorical data

Split the dataset into training (80%) and testing (20%) sets

Step 4: Train the Phishing URL Detection Model

Train a Random Forest Classifier, which is effective for phishing detection.

Step 5: Explain Model Predictions Using SHAP

SHAP helps to interpret the most important features influencing phishing detection.

The SHAP plot shows which features contribute most to phishing detection.

Higher SHAP values indicate a stronger influence on the model’s decision.

Step 6: Save and Load the Model for Deployment

This R implementation integrates XAI with phishing URL detection, to make AI-driven security more transparent.

Challenges of Implementing XAI in Phishing Detection

While XAI offers significant advantages, its implementation also comes with challenges:

Complexity vs. Simplicity: Striking the right balance between detailed explanations and user-friendly insights can be difficult. Overly technical explanations may confuse non-expert users.

Performance Trade-Offs: Adding explainability features to AI models can increase computational overhead, potentially slowing down real-time phishing detection.

Adversarial Attacks: Cybercriminals may exploit insights from XAI systems to develop more sophisticated phishing techniques, creating a cat-and-mouse game.

Scalability: Implementing XAI in large-scale phishing detection systems requires significant resources and expertise.

Conclusion

Phishing attacks continue to pose a significant threat to cybersecurity, but AI-powered phishing detection systems offer a powerful defense. However, the lack of transparency in traditional AI systems can undermine trust and effectiveness.

Explainable AI (XAI) addresses this challenge by making AI-driven decisions interpretable, trustworthy, and actionable. By integrating XAI into phishing detection systems, organizations can enhance their security posture, improve user confidence, and stay ahead of evolving cyber threats. As the field of XAI progresses, it will play an increasingly vital role in creating transparent and effective cybersecurity frameworks.

Traditional approach of Cybersecurity without AI

Before the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into cybersecurity, traditional approaches primarily relied on rule-based systems, signature-based detection, and manual analysis. In this conventional model, security analysts typically employ predefined rules and patterns to identify and mitigate cyber threats. Here are key aspects of the traditional approach:

Signature-Based Detection

Traditional security systems heavily relied on signature-based detection, where known patterns or signatures of malicious code were identified and stored in databases. This method was effective against known threats but struggled with new or evolving malware.

Firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)

Firewalls and IDS were fundamental components of traditional cybersecurity. Firewalls monitored and controlled incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules, while IDS focused on detecting and responding to suspicious activities within the network.

Manual Analysis and Incident Response

Security analysts conducted manual analysis of logs, events, and alerts to identify potential security incidents. Incident response procedures were often manual, requiring human intervention to investigate and mitigate threats.

Vulnerability Scanning

Vulnerability scanning tools were used to identify weaknesses in systems and networks. However, prioritization of vulnerabilities and subsequent remediation were largely manual processes.

Human-Centric Threat Intelligence

Threat intelligence was primarily derived from human analysis, often involving the monitoring of online forums, information sharing groups, and other sources to understand emerging threats.

Limited Scalability

Traditional approaches struggled to scale effectively with the growing volume and complexity of cyber threats. The manual nature of many processes made it challenging to keep pace with the dynamic threat landscape.

While these traditional cybersecurity measures played a crucial role in securing systems, they were reactive, relying on historical data and predefined rules.

The lack of adaptability to rapidly evolving threats and the increasing volume of data made it imperative to transition to AI-driven solutions that could provide real-time analysis, proactive threat detection, and automation to augment the capabilities of security analysts.

The integration of AI has marked a significant evolution in cybersecurity, allowing for more sophisticated and dynamic defense mechanisms.

How AI is used in cybersecurity?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely used in cybersecurity to enhance threat detection, automate response processes, and fortify overall cyber defenses.

Lack of Explainability

Many AI models, particularly complex ones like deep neural networks, operate as “black boxes,” making it challenging to explain why a specific decision or prediction was made. This lack of transparency can be a barrier to trust and accountability.

Over-Reliance on AI

AI systems may generate false positives (incorrectly flagging benign activity as malicious) or false negatives (missing actual threats), leading to potential security risks or unnecessary alerts.

Skill Gap and Training

There is a shortage of cybersecurity professionals with expertise in AI, making it difficult for organizations to effectively implement and manage AI-powered security solutions.

Integration Complexity

Incorporating AI into existing cybersecurity infrastructure can be complex. Ensuring seamless integration and compatibility with legacy systems is a significant challenge.

You’ve created a Text file in Notepad and saved it. So, What Happens Next?

After that, you should set up a Hash Calculator.

Step-2: Install a Hash Calculator Tool called HashCalc

Hash Calculator is a free tool that calculates MD2, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 hash of text or a file.

Open a web browser and navigate to http://www.slavasoft.com/download.htm

You will get the below Screen.

2. Click Download in the HashCalc 2.02 row

3. Open the hashcalc.zip file and run the setup.exe file inside

4. Follow the installation wizard to install Hash Calculator.

5. Once the installation is complete, click the Finish button.

Now You can see the Hashcalc is installed and running.

As you can see, Hashcalc is now installed and operational.

Then, do the Step-4.

Step-3: Calculate the Hash of a test.txt file

Choose the Data Format: File in the Hash calculator.

Click the next field Data and navigate to Desktop.

Then Choose the Test.txt file to calculate Hash Value

Uncheck the HMACC.

All hash types except MD5 should be unchecked. You’ll start by calculating the MD5. As a result, uncheck all of the other Hash types.

Click the calculate button.

What value you got? Answer may vary.

Here you got the value: 6cc4dbca7d93bf0d95feaa43a64a6d4e

Step-4: Make a change to the Test.txt file

Open the Text.txt file and modify the data, such as deleting a letter, or adding a space or period

2. Save the File and close the Notepad.

Step-5: Calculate a new Hash of the Test.txt file to check data got corrupted or not

Open the Hash Calculator.

Except for MD5, make sure the checkboxes for all other hash types are unchecked.

Click the calculate button.

Now, What is the value next to MD5?

As you can see, the hash value has changed as a result of the data being updated.

Here the Hash value is: 32406ab3d06f13cf707e62d6b38f96bc

So, this is the method to find whether the data got corrupted or not.

We have only used MD5 in this case. You can also test with different hash types.

Depending on the hash type, each hash value may differ. This is due to the fact that several hashes employ varying numbers of bits to generate a hash.

You can find the different types of Hash algorithms here.

In Closing.. – Data got corrupted or not

When someone or a program tries to access unauthorized data, a security breach occurs. This is one approach for determining whether or not data has been corrupted or tampered with. That is, whether or not any security breaches occurred.

Prevent cyber security breaches!!!

SEO Poisoning is Search Engine Poisoning. It is a kind of threat that involves creating fake web pages. That web pages stuffed with a high volume of keywords.

It deceives search engines in order to get top ranking in SERP (Search Engine Result Page).

The sites are related to the terms that a huge number of people are likely to be searching at any given time. For example, keywords related to holiday tour, viral videos, and news items etc.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Generally, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the marketing strategy. It is designed to ensure that your webpage is found when people search with the keywords related to your websites.

The ranking of the website is based on how well your page is optimized. It’s based not only on optimization but also on the reputation. Reputation is based on the number of inbound links pointing to a page. The ranking value will be high if the inbound links come from the websites relevant to your subject. Moreover, getting more inbound links from many other websites also will help for ranking.

In this article, we will see how cybercriminals trick to get a higher ranking with their fakely optimized websites.

Particularly, SEO poisoning tries to perform two major activities as follows.

(i) Creating fake websites with high ranking in SERP to attack the visitors of the page.

(ii) Exploiting vulnerabilities in the previous legitimate high ranking websites. Cybercriminals using that website to spread malicious activities.

The intent of malicious websites is to target visitors. Then install Trojans on their devices such as laptop, tablet, mobile and desktop etc.

Therefore, SEO poisoning reaches a huge number of people within a short duration. So they use trending topics based on the current situation. The topics which people are fascinated about.

Trending topics are based on people’s mindset and situations. During this pandemic, the major topic people used to search are related to COVID-19.

For example symptoms of COVID-19, precautions for COVID-19, the status report of the day etc. So, cybercriminals also use those topics to create illegitimate websites.

How do Cybercriminals use SEO Poisoning?

One of the main methods used by cybercriminals is blackhat SEO.

Blackhat SEO

This is called dark side SEO. Blackhat SEO creates scripts. It understands the website is visited by the legitimate user or search engine crawler. If the website is visited by the crawler, higher ranking content is given. If the website is visited by the legitimate user, malicious content is given.

In addition to that, there are some risky SEO techniques that are available in SEO Poisoning. We can see them below.

(i) Spam Comments

Have you gone through spam comments? The comments which are not related to your websites and have promotional links?

These spam comments are intended for creating the backlinks. This is currently one of the most popular techniques of blackhat people.

(ii) Keyword stuffing

Earlier, the most famous technique was the keyword stuffing used by blackhat SEO. The content will not be related to the website, rather it will be stuffed with keywords. Earlier, the Search Engines used to rank the content based on the keywords. They may be in the title, in the Meta tag or in the content. So the cybercriminals used the keyword stuffing intelligently for higher ranking.

The keywords can be stuffed in the invisible text also. Invisible text denotes the white text. Here, the keywords will also become invisible, even though search engines index them based on the keyword.

(iii) Paid Links

Buying links for SEO is a major advantage for buyers. After buying this, the attackers will not worry about the content. With the paid links, they manipulate search engine ranking. This is why the blackhat SEO technique needs to be analyzed.

Cross Site Scripting

Basically, it is not very easy to get a higher ranking for malicious websites through blackhat SEO. So cybercriminals use the cross-site scripting method.

Here, the attackers use the existing high ranking websites to spread malicious content.

Attackers inject malicious Javascript code and make it run by every visitor of that page. This code either directly spreads malware of the visitor’s machine or it redirects the website into some other malicious website.

These are the major techniques cybercriminals use for SEO Poisoning.

Therefore, we should follow some of the best practices to avoid SEO Poisoning.

Security Tips to avoid SEO Poisoning Attacks

The first and important practice is to train users not to visit unknown websites. Then educate them to understand the URL.

Use end-user security solutions, such as updated antivirus software to find malicious activities.

Regularly use the web vulnerability scanner and maintain your websites free of vulnerabilities.

If you find any SEO Poisoning activities hitting your site, immediately report to the search engine.

While using the website, if you click any link, then you should check the URL of the new page opened. Make sure that this current page is related to this website.

Maintain the regular practice of checking the URL of every click on the links.

Never provide your personal information to any websites. Once you realize it is the legitimate website, then you can proceed.

In Closing..

SEO Poisoning is a major setback for your website and business. Remember to keep your themes and plugins updated.

Set Guard!! Don’t let SEO Poisoning kill your search engine rankings!!

When Covid-19 Pandemic brought classrooms to the living rooms due to online classes, students everywhere happened to have mixed feelings. Hence, Many people are taking online classes on other platforms such as Coursera too.

In online colleges, many students are taking up the courses. Free online college courses are also available nowadays. Whether they enjoy or scrape through the remote classroom environment, it is imperative that they protected themselves from cybercriminals.

Yes, those are criminals who break the security of your systems which you use for your online classes and they tend to create a lot of flaws.

At this great paradigm shift in education, and many online courses, it has become inevitable to understand some basic cybersecurity steps. These can greatly help students, teachers and parents to make sure that they had a secure online classroom environment.

Cybersecurity Tips for Students on Online Classes

Think before you click a Link

You would have learnt that you should not accept candy from unknown people. You should follow the same logic here. Do not click links in chat boxes, Emails and text messages from anyone you are not aware of. Do not click the suspicious links if you received the form you are aware of as well.

Protect Your Devices

Protect your devices (Laptop, Mobile, and Tablet) in a safe place. Don’t leave your devices unattended. After your class gets over, keep it in a safe place at home. Set passwords to your system.

Ensure before you download

Consult with your parents or check correctly before you download any Email attachment or Apps. Malicious downloading gives room for viruses on your system. Once the system gets affected by the malicious software, you can’t recover from that easily.

Secure Passwords

Make strong passwords but make it short sentences for easy remembrance. The people who need to know your password are You, Your Parent, or Guardian. Don’t reveal your password even to your best friends or teacher.

Ex Password: Iliket0pl@yg@me$

Report Cyberbullies of online classes

If any batchmate of your online classes causes you disturbance or inconvenience, report them to the parents or teachers immediately.

Protect Your Personal Information

Don’t reveal your Address, Phone Number, Birthday, SSN, and Passwords to any strangers. If a stranger or someone asks you to share the information online, say No and stop responding to them. Inform your Parent or Guardian immediately.

Similarly we will see the cyber security tips for parents on online classes.

Cybersecurity Tips for Parents on Online Classes

Configure Privacy Settings

Configure the security features on your children’s devices to limit over-sharing of information such as location, camera, etc.

Separate Network is advisable

While Children attend online classes, parents do work from home day and night. In that case, parents may want to access some sensitive information. Hence, it is advisable to have separate WiFi facilities for you and your children. For children, provide the facility with a limitation.

Separate User Accounts

Sometimes you and your children may have to access the same device. In that case, use separate accounts for you and your children. You may access all data. For your children, set a guest account so that it will set limitations to access all the features.

Secure WiFi

Do you change the password of your Wi-Fi often? At least, once in six months change your Wi-Fi password. Passwords should be strong and also unique.

Legitimate Learning App

Plenty of learning Apps are available nowadays. Don’t download all the Apps blindly. A lot of malicious Apps play havoc these days. They may hack your children’s devices and steal their identity.

So, before downloading any learning App on your children’s system, do research about that App and find whether it is legitimate or not. How to do that research? You can consult with known people or search for any article related to that App. Then, find out the release date of the App, its reviews, etc.

Parental Control Software

A new cyber alert called Cerberus Trojan, a malicious software, theatres a significant role in COVID-19 pandemic. This cybersecurity threat/attack primarily focuses on stealing financial data.

It comes in the form of Short Messaging Services (SMS) to the customers of a bank. On opening the link that comes with the SMS, the malicious software is installed.

From the moment of installation, it starts collecting sensitive data such as password, Credit card Number, Debit Card Number, CVV etc.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has warned police and law enforcement agencies, as an alert has been received from the Interpol for the third time, since the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cerberus – Threat Analysis

Cerberus Trojan bypasses security measures and accesses text messages.

Researches have reported that the trojan has been found within a few days, as it spread through a Spanish currency converter app (called “Calculadora de Moneda”), which has been available to Android users in Spain since March.

Once executed, this banking trojan has the capabilities to steal victims’ bank-account credentials and bypass security measures, including two-factor authentication (2FA).

This App acts very intelligently to avoid initial detection. The App paints a very legitimate picture as it is available on the Google play store.

Functionalities of Cerberus

The app possesses various credential theft and spying functionalities. It has the capacity to sit on an existing banking App and wait for the application to be accessed.

When the user opens the banking application, it immediately accesses the data. It also has the ability to read text messages.

It can view two factor authentication (2FA) codes sent via messages.

Cerberus Trojan posing as Cryptocurrency App

Researches from Avast found Cerberus malware appearing on Google Play Store. The malware hid behind a cryptocurrency App.

The malware basically attempts to steal user’s banking data, which the users would enter while converting their cryptocurrency to fiat money.

This also allowed the App to escape security checks by Google Play store.

Malware has disappeared but threat Persists

Though the active Cerberus trojan functionality appeared for a very short time,

The users must tread with caution while downloading any App, especially the ones dealing with sensitive information, such as bank details.

Remote Access Trojan (RAT) functionalities

The new samples detected include a RAT functionality that enables the total remote control of an infected device.

It acts as a Remote Access Trojan as well.

So, two new features have been introduced,

(i) Commands to access the device files.

(ii) Commands to start the official team viewer application to take full control of the device, including the user interface.

It includes new features, primarily designed to provide attackers with the tools necessary to control the device, remotely.

On conversion into a Remote Access Trojan (RAT), Cerberus is renewed and reinforced, thereby requiring the strengthening of RAT detection measures.

Security Tips to avoid Cerberus Trojan,

Be careful what you download, think twice about what you download or even plug into your device.

Click on links that are from trusted sources. If you receive an email or text message from an unknown sender asking you to click on a suspicious link, beware and avoid interacting with the sender altogether.

Whether you are using a mobile banking app on your phone or browsing the Internet on your desktop, it’s important to safeguard all your devices with an extra layer of security. Use robust security software like McAfee Total protection so you can connect with confidence.

Finally,

We have discussed Cerberus and what are the security tips to avoid Cerberus. The Impact of this Trojan also we have seen. Hence, we need to be cautious of these types of attacks.

EventBot malware is a new mobile banking trojan that emerged in March, 2020 during Covid-19 pandemic. It is an Android mobile malware. EventBot attacks financial applications of your Android smartphone.

EventBot malware targets multiple financial applications including Cryptocurrency wallets, financial services and banking.

The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued an advisory, warning people against EventBot.

According to CERT, the EventBot trojan targets over 200 different financial applications.

EventBot malware is an Information-stealer. Moreover, it abuses the functionality of Android features.

EventBot malware attacks Android mobiles by accessing users’ credential data, system information and the important information stored in mobile applications. It is worth noting that EventBot malware can intercept SMS messages and bypass two-factor authentication.

The survey alleges EventBot was created to target more than 200 banking and financial applications. It has targeted many European bank and cryptocurrency applications.

Hence, we need to be on high alert against this Trojan.

Targeted Applications

The targeted applications include Paypal, CapitalOne UK, HSBC UK, Barclays, UniCredit, Revolut, TransferWise, Paysafecard, Coinbase and many more.

Therefore, when financial applications are used on Android mobiles, clicking on the links of any unknown sender must be avoided.

According to CERT, the GooglePlay store, as of now, does not identify EventBot, thereby increasing the danger of it masquerading as a legitimate application to misleading users.

Cybereason says that the following icons are used for masquerade legitimate applications.

Threat Analysis

Several versions of this banking trojan have emerged. The notable versions are 0.0.0.1, 0.0.0.2, 0.3.0.1 and 0.4.0.1.

Each version extended it’s threat functionality and abused the Android mobile to a great extent.

This threat requires the following permissions on installation,

WAKE-LOCK – Preventing the processor from going into sleeping mode.

ACCESS_NETWOK_STATE – Permit the App to access information on networks

READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE – Permission to access External storage

RECEIVE_SMS – Permission to receive SMS

READ_SMS – Permission to receive SMS

So, if an application requires the above-mentioned permissions on installation, one must be cautious.

If the configuration file is checked, the financial applications targeted by Eventbot can be identified. It may include the applications of International banks.

Most of the targeted applications are from UK and Italy.

It also targets applications from Germany, France, Romania, Spain, Ireland, Switzerland, India, Poland, Australia, USA etc.

Cryptocurrency, money exchange services, money transfers, credit card and management applications become prey to EventBot’s attack.

Functionalities of EventBot Malware

The basic functionalities of EventBot are,

Device Information

When EventBot is installed, it asks for device information like OS, Model, Vendor, GPStatus, GPVersion, botnetID, botVer, LibVer, ScreenLockType, etc.

Installed Applications

The EventBot lists out all the targeted applications that have been activated.

Parsing SMS

This trojan has the capacity to parse SMS messages and act immediately based on the given data.

Data Encryption.

Once EventBot is installed in an Android Mobile, it will use different methods of encryptions to lock the data. The different versions of EventBot have different encryption methods.

These are the major changes that follow the installation of EventBot.

Hence, if there is any doubtful activity noticed on using an Android mobile, care must be taken while performing financial transactions.

Impact of EventBot Malware

EventBot is a mobile banking trojan that steals financial information and hijacks transactions.

Once this malware is installed, it will collect personal information like passwords, keystrokes, banking information and other sensitive data.

Thus, Evenbot can be impactful. The following security tips can be followed to prevent an attack.

Security Tips for EventBot Malware

Keep your mobile device up-to date with the latest software updates from legitimate sources.

Keep Google Play protected.

Do not download mobile Apps from unofficial or unauthorized sources. Most legitimate Android Apps are available on the Google play store.

Always apply critical thinking and consider whether you should give an app the permission it requests.

When in doubt, check the APK signature and hash in sources like VirusTotal before installation on your device.

Use mobile threat detection solutions for enhanced security.

These are the major security tips you need to follow to avoid this Mobile Trojan.

Finally,

Nowadays, most of the online activities can be done through mobile devices. This has resulted in the introduction of mobile trojans, especially in Android mobile devices. As there is an increase in the usage of online shopping apps on mobile devices, the attackers are working to create mobile malware. EventBot malware is one among them. This is one of the methods of generating profit for cybercriminals.

Smishing and Vishing are the most critical attacks on which cybercriminals work on. Let’s see them one by one with relevant examples.

Smishing

Smishing is a type of phishing in which somebody attempts to fool you into giving them your private data through a telephone call or SMS message.

It is a combination of SMS and Phishing. (Do you want to know about Phishing?)

Smishing is turning into a developing and promoting risk in the realm of online security.

Texting is the most common practice for humans. Everyone communicates through mobile with text messages and calls.

A survey says that especially those who are aged between 18 and 24 send more than 2022 texts per month – on an average that’s 67 per day- and receive 1831.

Many people assume that smartphones are more secure than computers.

However, smartphones have their own limitations.

Particularly, they struggle with the smishing issue.

So, What is the remedy?

Smishing SMS’s work on a cross-platform.

Yes, People use smartphones as they move and they may read text messages in a hurry and respond fast.

Because of the distractions caused on their work, they may respond immediately to the bank related messages to get rid of them.

Hence, this becomes one of the risk factors for giving sensitive information to cybercriminals.

How does Smishing work?

Let’s see one of the real-time examples.

The figure below shows an SMS, which was received on 22nd June 2020. It is a fake SMS, and the given link is a fake URL as well. When one clicks the link, hacking starts there.

The SMS says “Congratulation; your number is selected for this much amount.” A link is also provided to click on. But it may lead to a fake site.

The SMS itself is fake. This way, cybercriminals act intelligently.

It is possible to prevent ourselves from becoming a victim of this type of attack.

Before seeing the tips of how to protect ourselves from Smishing, let’s see one more related attack of Phishing, called Vishing.

How does Vishing work?

Vishing is a combination of voice and Phishing.

Vishing attacks use a tricky Caller ID. The call looks like it comes from a known number, or it starts with the digits 800.

Vishing often uses VoIP technology to call.

Another one risky method Cybercriminals follow in Vishing is that they may post their numbers in social media.

For example, the posts like “We are here to repair your computers, call this toll free number” may appear on social media. When you call, one person speaks in a pleasant voice, and he acts like more than willing to help.

But once the payment for the repair work is done, the call will get disconnected, and you can never contact them after that.

Callers masquerade as Policemen, Technicians, Bankers, Tourist travel agencies, Executives, Business Partners, or Software professionals from companies like Intel.

One of the real-time examples is given below, Anand Kalyanaraman Says,

In the Year 2019, a person lost 23 lakhs to Cyber Fraud. A fraudster, posing as a bank manager, duped Kaur through a mobile phone call. The fraudster asked for victim’s bank account details on the pretext of wanting to deposit her salary.

He eventually managed to get her account number, ATM pin, Card Verification Value (CVV) number and a One Time password (OTP), reports say.

Soon, Victim got an SMS alerting that ₹23 lakhs was debited from her account. The accused was reportedly arrested.

Hence, it’s high time that we learn how to avoid Smishing and Vishing.

Tips to avoid Smishing

If the text message is from an unknown number, and if it urges you to give a quick reply, then it is the sign of smishing. Don’t respond.

Find the time when the unknown message was sent. If it was sent in an unusual time, then it is the sign of Smishing.

Don’t click the link of concealed messages.

Never call back the number that is associated with the text that you do not know.

Don’t reply to the messages which asked your personal data.

Don’t believe any text that says, “Congratulations, you are the Winner for your Phone Number and redeem your prize on or before this date”. Neither respond to it, nor click the link given to redeem your points.

Be aware of the text’s message number, which is not the phone number, for example, starting with “5000” etc. It is a Smishing message. You can’t trace the sender.

Never provide any sensitive information over an SMS or WA msg or Phone Call.

If the SMS says that it’s from a person known to you and asks for personal or sensitive data, call the person in the number which you have stored in your Contacts and find whether he/she requested your data. Don’t call the number in the SMS.

No financial organization or Bank will ask you to update the account information or confirm your ATM number through SMS. If you receive a text message like this, immediately you should enquire the bank or the respective financial organization.

Tips to avoid Vishing

Do not provide any personal information over the phone to an unknown person.

Be aware of any caller who asks you to share login information over the phone. Don’t give the details.

Never share your Credit card Number (PIN), Card Verification Value (CVV) and One Time Password (OTP) with the unknown calls. Bank personnel never ask that type of information over the phone. If you receive calls like that, immediately report to RBI.

If you hear a confident voice on the other end of the phone line which says that they are calling from RBI, a Card Company or from such financial organizations, don’t respond to the call. Just disconnect the call and ignore it.

Some cybercriminals combine vishing and phishing. It starts with the Phishing Email, which says that there is a problem in renewing your account and you need to call this number for account verification. Do not call such numbers.

Sign up for the National Do not call registry. The National Do not call registry tells how to stop unwanted sales calls. But beware, the scammers always find a way to ignore the registry also.

Report these types of attacks to FCI to prevent others.

These are essential tips to avoid Smishing and Vishing.

Hence, such messages or calls have to raise a spam flag. Just disconnect and ignore them. Report to the concerned departments immediately.

In Closing..

We have discussed two types of attacks, namely, Smishing and Vishing. Be alert and live a safe life without any losses caused by such tricks.

Hackers penetrate the systems and infect with malicious software. The malware is hidden in the system to infect it. Hackers used to slowly act on it and take full control of your system. You might not realize a hacker is already inside your system. But there are definitely signs you have been hacked.

So, we have decided to give the overview of twelve signs you have been hacked.

Along these lines, we should get to it. Here are 12 indications that should trigger the entirety of your alerts.

What are the signs you have been Hacked?

1.Gadgets suddenly slowing down / restarting

If your system slows down or reboots suddenly, then it’s advisable to perform a scan.

It’s essential that you perform the scan of your system at least once a month.

In Windows 10, there is built-in malware protection called Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. This helps to detect and remove the threats.

However, this needs to be updated with the new version.

2. Apps and Programs starting to crash

Applications and programs frequently crashing signals that something had gone wrong. So, it’s time to be alert and needs to check what’s gone wrong.

In this case, we need to put our gadget in safe mode and fix the problems.

Safe mode is designed to help you find problems with the gadgets. But it can be done only when the gadget is “OFF” normally.

Generally, a system can get into the safe mode by pressing or holding certain keys. If you aren’t sure about your device, use the help facility in the device page of your system to get to the Safe mode.

With Safe mode, we can delete and uninstall the Apps or programs which are not in use.

Hence, when the Apps or Programs start crashing, it’s mandatory that one takes the above-said precautions.

3. Pop-up Ads Popping up – Signs you have been hacked

This comes through an intrusive notification in a small window that suddenly appears in the foreground of the screen.

The malware sends this intrusive notification to your gadgets to eat up your data.

These Pop-ups inject malware on your system, which in turn kills your data as well as slows down the system.

Hence, for any reason, one should not click the Pop-Up window.

In Android mobiles also a lot of Pop-up Ads are popping up.

You can turn Pop-ups ON or OFF in your settings.

Open the Chrome App on your Android Phone

Tap “Settings” at the right of the address bar

Click Site Settings -> Pop-Ups and Redirects

Turn Pop-Ups and Redirects ON or OFF

You can allow notifications only from specific sites according to the necessity.

4. Usage of data hitting high – Signs you have been hacked

Sometimes, when malware hits the gadgets, more data may be consumed than regular consumption. So, you should check the bandwidth consumption as frequently as you can.

Bandwidth consumption can be checked with the Internet Provider’s website.

Internet providers may have Internet bandwidth Usage or Data Monitor option, which varies based on the providers.

Compare data usage with your regular usage. If it is more and unusual, you need to be alert. Your system might have been eyed by malware.

For Android Phones, you can check data usage under the Network & Internet option of Settings.

So, if you are skeptic about your gadgets being infected, you can scan your system immediately and rule it out.

5. Video Buffering– Signs you have been hacked

If the system starts buffering during video streaming, chances are there your system has been hacked.

Another culprit that buffers video during live streaming might be a slow network connection.

So, you need to check the Internet Connection. If connection strength is good, then you need to be wise.

Sometimes, neighbours may steal your connection. Hackers may redirect your Internet connection to illegitimate servers.

So, check the DNS settings and detect the loophole. There are some online tools available to protect from hijacking.

6. Suspicious activities in Social Network

Keep checking your banking details. If there is any suspicious activity, immediately change your password.

Keep an eye over your social network posts and your E-Mail folders.

Your friends may receive social media invitations from you that you had not sent.

Hackers may create a fake page in your name and send friend requests.

In this case, you need to change your password and also take action according to the cyber law.

If you find any unknown person doing shopping in your name, then take actions like credit card freezing, account details locking, etc.

Hence, checking the online activities should be your regular practice.

7. Ransomware message – Signs you have been hacked

You may get a message saying, ‘Your files are encrypted’, and you may be expected to pay ransom to decrypt the files.

There is a chance that the whole system is locked because of Ransomware.

Click here to learn about the Ransomware.

8. Having unwanted browser toolbars

It is a common misuse activity. Your browser may show some new toolbars which may pretend to help you.

Unless you know it is from a known vendor, better don’t select that toolbar. It may inject malware.

So, it is good to avoid malicious toolbars.

9. Mouse moving without control and making selections

You may notice the mouse pointer moving without any control and selecting the programs automatically. Then, you need to understand that it is the sign of malware being injected/hacked.

Then, immediately change your login names and passwords.

Check your bank transactions and all the files on your system.

If it gets damaged much, file a case based on cyber law.

10. Automatically redirecting to unwanted websites

Once the user clicks a URL, it automatically redirects to the illegitimate websites.

The user doesn’t realize that it is done by cybercriminals.

You have to check the website with the keywords whether it’s the original website and a legitimate one.

11. Unwanted Software Installs

Unwanted software Installs is one of the major signs you have been hacked.

It may be malicious software and injects the legitimate files.

12. Fraud protection alert – signs you have been hacked

Fraud / Fake alert message may pop-up from antivirus software or any protection software.

It is one of the major signs of the system being hacked or injected with malware.

The strategy behind this is, when the user clicks the link on the fake alert, it redirects the user to an illegitimate website.

So, be cautious while getting alert messages from an antivirus or protection software.

These are the major signs you have been hacked.

Prevention is better than Cure

We have discussed the signs you have been hacked. Keep an eye on these indications and symptoms and be cautious about these. If signalled, take necessary action immediately and keep monitoring the device.

Use an updated version of Antivirus software. The passwords also need to be changed regularly.

Yes, prevention is better than cure.
